Why this blog?

Every once in a while, the idea of developing a game in my spare time shows up. Working on something that would take more than a couple of week ends to complete. I’ve made multiple attempts in the past but I never committed enough time and focus to make it happen. Unsurprisingly this idea showed up once again a few weeks ago and I started thinking about it. What am I going to do with it this time around?


If you want to make a game, now is the time to grab one of those free game engines (Unity, Unreal etc.) and do it. Is it really what I want to do though? After all I’m already working with AAA game engines at work. What about I explore new things, like building my own game engine? Taking this opportunity to learn things I might have overlooked or taken for granted.

As appealing as it sounds that’s a very ambitious project to undertake. Well, it all depends on its scope right? And even though I don’t have a clear idea of the game I want to make, I know I want to develop a 2D game with sprite based animations. That should make it manageable.

Furthermore, I’m not going to start completely from scratch as Casey Muratori does with his Handmade Hero project [2]. I decided I’m going to rely on OpenGL and the SDL 2.0. And the rest will be up to me.

That’s where the blog comes into play. I’ll use it to share regular updates and ideas throughout the development process.
